30-04-23 | It’s Christmas for comic book fans once again! May the 3rd is the day to support your locals and get some free stories in the process. The wonderful initiative that is Free Comic Book Day seems to grow larger by the year. What excited me in particular is the wide range of titles for children and young adults. A perfect way to discover what comics have to offer. And if you are a hardened dyed in the wool Marvel, DC or Image reader … no problem! Free Comic Book Day offers something for everyone! See you on May the 3rd, folks.

MARVEL COMICS
The House of Ideas dominates the line-up as usual. The Fantastic Four title ties into X-Men continuity and anticipates their new summer blockbuster. Also check out The Amazing Spider-Man, a prelude to Marvel’s upcoming Ultimate Universe. Plus Marvel Voices offers a unique twist on Ironheart.

SUPER HEROES
DC will naturally be focussing on Superman this year. Their freebee celebrates the recent All-In and Absolute Supermen, not to mention the upcoming cinematic reboot. Elsewhere the Power Rangers will team up with the VR Troopers, while Lee Falk’s The Phantom resurfaces, courtesy of Mad Cave.

JAPANESE CHARACTERS
The manga rage has still not hit it’s peak, which explains why an increasing amount of FCBD titles feature Asian heroes. Aside from the Rangers classic titles like Street Fighter and Speed Racer are bound to be popular. IDW uses Godzilla: The New Heroes to relaunch their popular range of Kaiju comics.

KIDS
One of the most important and joyful aspects of FCBD is the opportunity to introduce young readers to comic books. Loads of non-superheroes titles are available this year, including Toy Box and (amazingly) Dr. Seuss. Want some fantasy sprinkled in? Try Minecraft or Young Jedi Adventures.

OTHERS
Also of interest are Energon Universe, Rob Kirkman’s ongoing Hasbro tie-in, a new Conan the Barbarian, the essential annual Star Wars titles, British fan favourite 2000AD and a graphic Will Eisner biography. Plus don’t forget to pick up BOOM! Studios special 20th anniversary issue! Enjoy FCBD, folks!
