JULY : BATMAN AND SUPERMAN HIT 1100 ISSUES AND MORE …

24-06-26 | What a month to be a DC fan! Two of DC Comics’ most important titles are celebrating incredible milestones. The magazines that launched Superman and Batman, way back in the 1930s, are going to blow your socks off. But wait. There’s more! DC also treats us to a Dark Knights of Steel sequel, plus a massive Jack Kirby retrospective. That last title in particular should appeal to Marvel fans seeking for an excuse to dip their toe into the DC waters. Let’s see what July has to offer!

THE LAST STARFIGHTER #1
Hot on the heels of their Marvel movie adaptation reprint, Mad Cave Studios is relaunching eighties classic The Last Starfighter. You know the story: a small town kid is selected by an alien race to save the galaxy after beating their simulation test, masquerading as an arcade cabinet. Sci-fi at its best!

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #1
Are you one of the many readers that loved Superman and Batman as medieval knights? DC Comics treats you to another epic swashbuckler by Tom Taylor. Like series 1 the tale will unfold across twelve exciting issues. This time ‘round Superman and Batman fight mythical monsters from ancient Atlantis.

THE HELLBOUND STAGECOACH #1
The trend of blending the wild west with horror continues in The Hellbound Stagecoach. Jackal Jones has to protect Charity Bloodruth from very eighties looking zombies and werewolves. This sweet little indie title by twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska is part of the ever expanding Rippaverse.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG X GODZILLA #1
Having jumped the shark a loooong time ago, IDW comes up with a team-up that makes more sense than some of their recent titles. The evil Dr. Eggman tries to harness Godzilla’s incredible powers. Naturally, Sonic tries to foil his fiendish plan. Another fun and carefree yarn by Marino and Lawrence.

STAR WARS: THE NEWSPAPER STRIPS – collected edition
Get ready for a daily dose of Star Wars! Following in the footsteps of Flash Gordon, this newspaper serial was launched in 1979 when Star Wars-mania was at its height. Marvel reprints all the amazing stories by Al Williamson. This volume features the restored and colorized editions from the 1990s.

ACTION COMICS #1100
The comic that launched Superman in 1938 celebrates its 1100th issue in style. Action Comics #1100 features the final chapter of the Reign of the Superboys story arc, in which Superman had gone missing. The Man of Tomorrow returns in the exciting conclusion by Mark Waid among others.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1111
Detective Comics
hits a fun little landmark too. Though Batgirl and Robin are Bruce Wayne’s best known sidekicks, Batman has also frequently worked alongside Black Canary and Green Arrow. In this issue the terrific trio has to face an obscure disgruntled sidekick from the past. Holy grudges, Batman!

JACK KIRBY’S DC UNIVERSE – collected edition
DC Comics celebrates the legacy of Jack Kirby! This titan among artists is best know for his Marvel titles, but did some of his greatest work at DC during the 1970s. Do you like variety? This hardcover features the Demon, Sandman, a Super Powers tie-in plus war, horror and crime anthologies.

BONUS : THE SECRET OF DRAGONWELT
And in case the news hasn’t reached you: Peter Pan Comics recently released its first videogame! The Secret of Dragonwelt deals with Prince Abel, a young hero who sets out to destroy the evil dragon Verdugo and save Princess Wicca. A classic point-and-click adventure which is free to play on Itch.io!
