27-08-25 | With the end of summer just beyond the horizon it’s time to take another look at essential reads for the upcoming month. And I’m happy to report that the line-up is relatively sober. There are unexpected team-ups, but not half as gimmicky as others from the past. There are new twists on familiar characters, but they feel like logical next steps. September ’25 is going to be a lot on no-nonsense fun. Just Batman, Deadpool, Godzilla and Boba Fett doin’ what they do best!
BATMAN #1
For only the fourth time in its 85 year history, the Batman magazine gets rebooted. With ace writer Matt Fraction at the helm we’re bound to be in for a treat. The Dark Knight appears in a series of standalone stories, though loyal readers will be rewarded in the long run. Sensible comics! I’m all for it!
MAGIC THE GATHERING : UNTOLD STORIES #1
The Dark Horse line of Magic comics was a big hit, so it’s only logical that they dig a little deeper into the lore. Untold Stories takes you to the bowels of hell, where Elspeth has been trapped by her enemies. But fighting hordes of demons only makes her stronger. A fantasy tale you won’t want to miss.
STAR WARS: BOBA FETT – BLACK, WHITE & RED #1
Marvel’s series of visually stunning Star Wars anthologies continues. Though Darth Maul and Vader might be a better fit aesthetically, Boba Fett has what it takes to take the Black, White & Red series to the next level. Will Star Wars dare to be bloody and gory? Fett has yet to let us down. This is the way.
CREEPSHOW #1
One can never read too many horror comics. Especially if they are based on the superb film by George Romero and Stephen King. What makes this new series of Creepshow extra exciting is that it’s produced by Image Comics! Their commitment to quality storytelling is just what the genre needs.
