29-04-26 | Well, folks. Things are going to be handled differently this year. Since 2002 Free Comic Book Day has been a force to be reckoned with, allowing comic book stores to reach new readers and reward their loyal followers. But the bankruptcy of Diamond Comics Distributors has changed all that.
The Free Comic Book Day brand has changed hands and its new owner, Universal, plans to expand its horizons to include games and hobby stores. This has ruffled the feathers of Penguin Random House (distributor of Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW and BOOM!) to such a extent that they refused to participate in FCBD ’26 and launched their own initiative: Comics Giveaway Day.
That’s right, now there are two brands offering free comics on May the 2nd going head to head. Readers are still unsure how to feel about all this. Did FCBD put the pressure on Penguin Random House? Or was Marvel (i.e. Disney) unwilling to play ball? Some might argue that FCBD broadening its horizon to include hobby stores expands the potential readership. On the other hand, there is something to be said for Comics Giveaway Day remaining loyal to local comic book stores.
Is this a clash of titans or an unfortunate misunderstanding? Do we support one party over the other? Will this affect new readers from enjoying the spirit of the original FCDB? That is up to you to decide!
Highlights for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2026

DC COMICS
A new roster of rugged and edgy characters gets teased in a special DC Next Level preview. Get ready for brand new adventures starring Lobo, Deathstroke and Batwoman. Plus DC reprints the first issue of their Sonic the Hedgehog crossover. That’ll teach IDW for working with Penguin Randon House!

FANTASY
The annual Conan the Barbarian titles have become a staple of FCBD. And this year we get two! Tides of the Tyrant King and The Pool of the Black One are not to be missed. Nor is Inanna: The Name She Lost which, despite bogus hype about actress-turned-writer Inanna Sarkis, looks very atmospheric.

GRAPHIC NOVELS
Want something with a bit more bite? How about Gun Honey by Charles Ardai, about a femme fatale smuggling weapons into the Kremlin. Or sample the ongoing epic The Future is ****** by Fred van Lente, where hackers are the final hope for humanity. Big ideas for big readers. You’re welcome.

MARVEL
As usual Marvel uses May the 2nd to set up some major plotlines. Spider-Man faces the Hulk, possessed by the evil spirit of the Eldest. Spidey also turns up in the next chapter of Armageddon, in which the Avengers and the X-Men face extinction along with the rest of the Marvel Multiverse.

TOY BRANDS
Some may bemoan nostalgia driven franchises, but I don’t mind. Dark Horse Comics and BOOM! Studios both offer a set of fun double features. You could either pick up the Masters of the Universe plus Dungeons and Dragons issue or go for the My Little Pony plus Jem and the Holograms title.

KIDS
May the 2nd is a great day for youngsters to pick up their very first comic book. Penguin Random House has a fine selection of titles for young readers like Pizza and Taco, The Last Kids on Earth, The Whole Wide World of Mabel Mulligan plus a special edition of Spidey and his Amazing Friends.
Whether you’re team Free Comic Book Day or Comics Giveaway Day, remember the true spirit of May the 2nd. It’s all about supporting comics vendors, comics creators and comics lovers all over the world.
Speaking of free stuff: I’ve recently launched my very first videogame. The Secret of Dragonwelt! It’s a bit rough around the edges but if you like fantasy adventures or classic point-and-click games, you might want to give The Secret of Dragonwelt a go. Especially since it’s free to play on Itch.io. Thanks for your support and see you next month!
