12-12-23 | Matt Fraction’s incredible Adventureman returns! Not just with a new face, even the gender is different. The previous Image Comics series saw Claire Connell retracing the steps of lost pulp hero Adventureman. Next week Claire returns to take his place, as she suits up to become the definitive adventurer in Adventureman Ghost Lights.
Speaking to thegameofnerds.com, writer Fraction revealed how Adventureman, a tribute to the pulp characters of old, came to be. ‘What I find fascinating in all the pulp material I’ve been exposed to are things like the rudimentary DNA of the superhero genre, combined with their worldly sense of adventure, geography, and scale the stories take. To me there’s as much Tintin in Adventureman as there is Doc Savage, I guess.’
While the previous series explored the legacy of classic escapist literature, Adventureman Ghost Lights looks to the future. ‘Claire Connell, the new avatar of pulp hero Adventureman, faces down the deadly Ghost Gang with the supernatural aid of old friends wearing new guises – at stake hangs the make-up of reality itself!’ What does it take to be a hero?
