01-10-23 | Batman is thrust into one his strangest adventures yet, as he comes face to face with gothic author H.P. Lovecraft’s greatest creation: the Cult of Cthulhu. In Batman: City of Madness, the Dark Knight uncovers a hidden society, worshiping the sinister Old Ones that have slept since before the dawn of mankind. The origins of the Cthulhu are to horrible to contemplate, so much so that exposure to the truth hurls even the strongest minds into madness.
Artist and illustrator Christian Ward perfectly blends the worlds of Batman and H.P. Lovecraft into a horror adventure which is not to be missed. Batman’s dark heritage makes him the perfect character to meet vintage heroes like the Shadow or gothic villains such as Count Dracula. Lovercraft’s comic horror is no exception. The Cthulhu Mythos poses a real threat to Batman, who will have to face one of his greatest challenges yet.
‘Buried deep beneath Gotham City there exists another Gotham. This Gotham Below is a living nightmare, populated by twisted mirrors of our Gotham’s denizens, fuelled by the fear and hatred flowing down from above.’ Ward not only reproduces the disturbing visuals associated with Lovecraft, he confidently utilizes the famous author’s themes and fears to create Batman: City of Madness. The first of two Black Label issues will be available next week, with the second following mid-November.
