27-07-23 | During the mid-1980s the villainous Magneto was briefly in charge of Prof. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Now a brand new comic will reexamine this seminal bit of Marvel history. The book, simply titled Magneto, takes places during his tenure as headmaster as depicted in New Mutants from 1985 onwards. A nostalgic yet innovative take on the legendary villain, part of the 60th anniversary of the X-Men.
It could only come from the pen of classic writer J.M. DeMatteis, whose writing is supported by superb artwork by Todd Nauck. ‘Magneto may be the single most complex character in the Marvel Universe’ explains DeMatteis. ‘A man of dizzying contradictions who has endured, and caused, extraordinary suffering. Who’s been both villain and hero.’ DeMatteis grants readers several wildly different perspectives on Magneto, creation a complex portrayal of the legendary character.
The cover reflects the duality of Magneto’s choices and motivations. A new character called Irae, a brand new X-men not present in New Mutants, will take Magento’s lessons to the next level. It’s Marvel Comics at its best, as the finest creative talent takes a seemingly simple tale and spins it into a complex and thought provoking fantasy adventure story. Magneto is out next week, with the second (and possibly last) issue following in November.
