16-08-23 | Legend Pictures has confirmed today that their Toxic Avenger remake is to be released this September. And none other than Peter Dinklage is to take on the title role of Toxie. The 1984 film has become a cult classic of bad taste, successfully fusing the comedy, horror and superhero genres.
The Toxic Avenger deals with nerdy weakling Winston Gooze, who is turned into a hideously deformed hulking hero after being exposed to toxic waste. The remake will not strictly follow the story beats of the original film, but the broad strokes remain the same. Dinklage allows himself to be cast against type once more, portaying the towering Toxic Avenger of Tromaville.
Lloyd Kaufman, the renegade filmmaker who co-directed the classic Toxic Avenger, is a vocal critic of modern Hollywood and its glossy and conservative flicks. Kaufman and partner Michael Herz produced the Dinklage remake themselves to ensure the classic Troma Studio anarchy remains a key ingredient. The new Toxic Avenger premieres the 21st of September and co-stars Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood.
