NEWS ROUND-UP : SUMMER 2023

23-09-23 | With summer officially behind us we reflect upon the biggest news stories of the past season. It’s been an eventful summer, with plenty of great comics, movie announcements and unique projects you won’t want to miss!

EPIC COMICS AT MARVEL AND DC
Marvel Comics is rethinking the way it approaches the intrepid X-Men, with a storyline that spans countless issues. The Fall of X storyline smashes the world of X-Men to pieces, with uncertainty over whether it’ll ever be the same again. Quite a few fans have been vocal about this arguably overblown story arc. Marvel’s Contest of Chaos was a lighter alternative, with many key Marvel heroes pitted against each other in battles to the death. Spider-Man vs. Wolverine pleased quite a few fans, as did Knight Terrors. This DC range saw classic heroes plunged into a sinister nightmare world. Unlike Fall of X, Knight Terrors unfolded over a limited number of issues, with many standalone spin-offs focussing on specific characters such as Superman and Batman.

NEW SUPERHEROES AT THE CINEMA
James Gunn has revealed that David Corenswet is to be his new Superman in the upcoming film Superman Legacy. After months of waiting, James Gunn’s take on the DC Universe is finally taking shape. Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Equally exciting is the news that Peter Dinklage will be appearing as the Toxic Avenger soon! The cult classic blends horror and heroes with the type of humour which fits Dinklage like a glove. The Toxic Avenger could have been just another minor remake, but with Dinklage, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon involved it’s bound to be big. New heroes that don’t require waiting are the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who have made a big impact on audiences worldwide. The animated remake is a fresh start to the legendary franchise.

FLASH FAILS, AHSOKA EXCELS
One of the most anticipated superhero films of the year, The Flash, has been cursed from the beginning. Lead actor Ezra Miller’s troubles with the law have soured the films reception. Michael Keaton’s return to the role of Batman underperformed, but was not as poorly received critically as was expected. Final judgement has yet to be passed on Ahsoka, since the Star Wars series is ongoing as of writing this article, but the show seems to be doing very well indeed. It’s hit and miss for live action fantasy. Are DC movies, the Marvel Universe and the Star Wars franchise starting to turn stale?

SAN DIEGO COMIC CON ANNOUNCEMENTS
The leading comic book convention in San Diego is the definitive place to launch media franchises. Announcements this year include The Marvels, the latest MCU epic starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, The Walking Dead franchise, which is breeding spinoffs like Dead City, Daryll Dixon and videogame The Walking Dead: Betrayal, plus a brand new Adventure Time animated series. Fiona and Cake will gender swap the lead characters, following a popular episode of the cult television series. But what about comics?! Besides Fall of X and a new Punisher range, the biggest announcement was Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, a concept which manages to be ludicrous and awesome in equal measure.

GIRLS TAKE OVER PETER PAN COMICS
Have you met Kitty Cosplay yet? This cute and quirky cosplay model has already appeared as Harry Potter, Captain Kirk and Wednesday Addams, while our Elfia cosplayers continue to be featured. Not your average cosplay chick, this Kitty! Be sure to check her out. Speaking of quirky chicks, The Exterminator has proven to be the best webcomic we’ve featured so far. This sci-fi series follows the adventures of Saxma, as she rids space stations of giant cockroaches. Lots of laughs and incredible art by Jobson Chagas! Cosplay Girl, the very first hero of Peter Pan Comics, has also returned. She’s currently facing the villious Mr. Skull once more. You can read these comics free of charge right here at Peter Pan Comics, and there’s more to come!

And that was the summer season in a nutshell. Both Marvel and DC have spoiled us with plenty of team-up storylines. The Flash fails at the box office, so stay at home and watch Star Wars Ahsoka instead. We have a new Superman and Toxic Avenger to look forward to, not to mention plenty of great shows and comics teased at San Diego Comic Con. And with Kitty Cosplay as the new face of Peter Pan Comics, there’s always a reason to visit our website. See you next season!
